Welcome

The Group consists of about 100 members and leaders in the four sections. It is based in Reading as part of the youth work of the Reading YMCA at whose premises it meets in winter, moving to its riverside HQ by the River Thames in summer (except for the Beaver Scouts!)

The Group

1st Reading was formed on 19th February 1908 making it (probably) the oldest Group in Berkshire. It has run continuously then, including during World War 2 when it was under the Leadership of a Lady - Miss Helena Shelagh -who was then Headmistress of a local school. This was quite revolutionary in those days!! The Group is Royal Naval recognised number 83 and has been for over 50 years.

READING - The Town

Reading was once known as the town of the three B's - beer, bulbs and biscuits, for Simonds Brewery, Suttons Seeds and Huntley and Palmer biscuits. It these days of takeovers and amalgamations only a brewery built by Courages remains of the original industries. However there are still parks and sports grounds with names to remind us of the industries of the past. Reading is situated in and is the county Town of the Royal County of Berkshire. It is on the River Thames,45 miles upstream of London and 20 miles upstream of Windsor. It is known as a very historic town with unfortunately little left to show for it.
