3rd March 2011: Dogs Need Accomodation After Sanctuary Fire - Scott Depot, WV

Dog Photo Loading Dog Photo Loading
Sara Tackett, one of our WV rescuers, had her home burnt down to the ground. She has helped us out with several crisis situations in SW WV; hoarding situations, shelter crises, and emergency transports. Sara is currently borrowing some kennel space at a boarding facility but this is filling up so she needs to place the dogs elsewhere. Listed below are some of the dogs that Sara has moved to boarding due to the fire. If you have room for 1 or 2 or 5, please contact me ASAP at candi163@gmail.com

KENAI - neutered female, Sheltie mix, 9-10 years, tri-color. Click here for photo. Very sweet, no aggression at all. Housebroken, good with kids. Pays too much attention to cats, but we have never had a problem though I would not leave her alone with them. Likes a quiet, calm environment. She does not like it when the other, younger dogs rough house around her so will walk to another area.

LOBO - neutered male, Elkhound mix, senior, black and brown. Click here for photo. Came from BLSARE last summer. Lobo is a very sweet elderly gentleman. He is crate trained and possible house broken. No aggression at all. Lobo needs a retirement home to enjoy his golden days.

ZION - neutered male, American Bulldog/Boxer mix, 2-3 years approx, brindle. Click here for photo. Zion is of our favorite dogs, but has issues that I have not quite figured out. He does not like some people, and is very defensive of me. He will need special placement with rescue that can figure out his issues. He has no food or toy aggression. He gets along great with other dogs, except one, that just started in last couple of months. I cannot stress enough what a good boy he is. He was an owner release because situational problems (he got too big for their trailer). They reported that he would break out of crate and become destructive. We have NOT had that problem at all. I think he was lonely, needed exercise and a play buddy, which he has received from us.

SASH - neutered female, Smaller Hound mix, 4 years approx, black and red. Click here for photo. Sash is a TRUE FEAR BITER but is better in general with women. She has mild submissive peeing, but is crate trained. She adores my daughter. We consider her one of our sanctuary dogs, not really adoptable unless someone can work through her issues. Sash is submissive to other dogs and gets picked on by bigger ones.

Dog Photo Loading JACK - neutered male, Labrador mix?, 7-8 years approx, golden brownish with beautiful eyes. Click here for photo. Jack used to be terrible at submissive urination, but is a little better now. He is crate trained and good with kids. He has never been a problem with other dogs, except the one that picked on him. No aggression issues.

LUCKY - neutered male, Beagle, 7-8 years approx, tri-color. Click here for photo. Lucky is one of my favorites. He has too much history to list, but I can go into detail on inquiry. NOT crate trained. Will eat anything so you must be careful what he is around, ie cardboard box, towels, etc. Gets along with everyone but likes to harass other dogs. Has arthritic left rear leg secondary to an old traumatic injury. he is a little bit shy with new people but warms to them. No aggression at all. Poos when he is nervous.

TINA - neutered female, Chihuahua mix, 5-6 years approx, white and tan. Click here for photo. Tina is originally from Taylor county. They thought she was becoming run aggressive. I cannot cleanly categorize Tina though she is some type of fear biter, but not completely. Tina adores me but does not like my kids. She is mostly crate trained. No dog or food aggression. LOVES to be loved by those she has accepted.

JAKE - neutered male, Great Dane/Lab mix, 7-8 years approx, black. Click here for photo. Jake gets along with other dogs, but likes to play rough and show dominance, but is not truly aggressive. He just needs an alpha human to reign him in. He likes kids, but has knocked my daughter over a couple of times just playing. He really should not be with children younger than 12. He gulps food, so put a little water on it so that he does not vomit. No food or toy aggression.

OZZY - neutered male, Hound mix, 8-10 years approx, tri-color. Click here for photo. Ozzy has a lot of environmental allergies, but they improve when he is not in our house. We had him tested at Med-Vet in Columbus several years ago, can get records if needed. He does well on Purina sensitive systems (salmon based) food and Dinovite. The food is maybe $5 extra a month than regular food, Dinovite maybe $20 extra a month. I will be happy to send supply. He has 1-3 fits a year, but the vet said they were too infrequent for meds. He is crate trained. Licks and bites the crate and has worn his teeth down early. Needs a little water on his food.

MOUSE - neutered male, Hound mix, 4 years approx, tan. Click here for photo. Mouse came from Mason County in 2007. He is the worst abuse case I have personally worked with. He was apparently kicked under his chin causing a loss of teeth and a broken jaw that healed improperly. My vet said he had healed, and could not be corrected. Mouse has taken a lot of work, but Tracy can testify as to how far he has come. He loves to chew sticks and an empty bag of dog food to lie on. No special diet, just soak food in water. Has to find a homne/foster home ASAP as he is not doing well in boarding.

MONITOR - neutered male, Dobermann Pinscher mix, 8-10 years approx, black and tan. Click here for photo. Monitor is my buddy! He leans on me when he wants a fuss. He has a cataract in his right eye so has reduced vision in that eye. He is submissive to humans, but does not get along with other dogs - growls at them. No food aggression. Crate trained. This dog loves to run, great off leash!

DUBYA - neutered male, Collie mix, 9-10 years approx, tan and white. Click here for photo. BW (stands for brown and white dog), aka 'Dubya' is a wonderful dog. He is very intelligent. He will smack his crate door if it is closed, until it opens for him. No aggression at all. He is crate trained.

COCO - neutered female, Chocolate Labrador, 2 years approx. Click here for photo. Coco is VERY highly strung, but a typical Lab. He gets along well with other dogs and kids. No aggression at all. he is crate trained.

SPARKY - neutered male, Spaniel cross?, 15 months approx. Click here for photo. Sparky came from BLSHARE last year. He is mostly crate trained. Very puppy-ish, likes to play, especially with kids. No real dog aggression, but likes to annoy the others, ie trying to play when they do not want to! He does get growl at dogs if they approach while you are making a fuss of him. No food or toy aggression.

GUINAN - neutered female, Black Labrador, 9-10 years approx. Click here for photo. Guinan (from Star Trek NG) is crate trained, housebroken, good with kids. She is a good bed buddy, does not move at all. Overall good dog. Typical Lab food gulper, needs a little water with her dried food.

MELVIN - neutered male, Border Collie, senior, black and white. Click here for photo. Melvin has attention deficit disorder. He is 99% crate trained. HE IS FOOD AGGRESSIVE, but better than he used to be. He loves to play, especially with kids. He is good with other dogs.

TUVOK - neutered male, Elkhound mix, 7-8 years, black and white. Click here for photo. Tuvok (from Star Trek Voyager) is very shy and submissive. He is crate trained. No food, dog or toy aggression. Does not walk well on leash.

EDDIE - neutered female, Staffordshire Bull Terrier mix?, 8-10 years, brindle and white. Click here for photo. Eddie is very submissive with humans. She adores my daughter. Eddie likes to run up and nip another dog on the leg then take off. She will not fight, just likes to be weird. If they chase her, she rolls on her back. She is crate trained. No food aggression, we have to coax her to eat.

If you have room for one of these dogs please contact me ASAP at candi163@gmail.com
Dog Photo Loading December 28th 2010: Stock Needs a Home - Cottageville, WV

Stock is a Boxer/Great Dane Mix, 2-3 years old. He was found as a stray then surrendered by his owner because he would not pay the cost of tags and a rabies shot to get him back. Stuck seems to get along with other dogs when he is playing outside, but he has some food aggression when confined with other dogs in the kennel. Stuck weighs about 60 pounds. He ignored the lobby cats and wanted to check out the people in the lobby. If you take him home, Stuck won't be stuck in the shelter any longer! Click on the picture for a larger photo. Click here for more photo's of this dog and check that he is still available.

Pets Needing Homes at Huntington-Cabell-Wayne Shelter, WV
We are the Animal Control Shelter for Cabell and Wayne counties. You can see lots of dogs and cats needing homes on our Petfinder list here. We receive dogs and cats every day so not all the pets are on the website. Please visit us to find a dog or cat that will suit you. Due to overwhelming numbers during the summer, not all kittens will be pictured on our web site. Please come to the shelter to see our selection of furry feline babies!

If you are interested in making a donation to the shelter, there are a few things they could use. Newspapers, dry cat/dog food, towels, blankets, toys, sponges, bleach, and cat litter. Monetary donations are also welcome! If you are interested in the availability of a pet, contact the shelter directly at 696-5551. It will save so many animals for so little of your time! Thanks so much!

Mason County Animal Shelter, Point Pleasant, WV
The shelter is the home of the Mason County Animal Welfare League (MCAWL), a group of hard working volunteers that have been trying to make this county pound a no-kill shelter and help these animals. See photo's of the new accomodation here. Can you help? Click here to see the items we need. Donations made via the website will go directly to MCAWL (Mason County Animal Welfare League, the people caring for the animals), NOT the county. We need people to help with strategies for long term: shelter construction, spay/neuter, public education to prevent dumping of animals, grant writing to support MCAWL's efforts, etc. If you have any expertise that you feel may be of assistance in this effort, please contact us. Anyone wishing to help can reach MCAWL via the email address masoncawl@yahoo.com

Adopt a Friend
The first step to adopt is to fill out an application form (Word document). Please understand that you may be approved to adopt but you may not be able to adopt the dog you are asking about. We try to match the personality of the animal to the requirements of the home. If you are looking for an animal that is laid back and easy going and you pick one that we know is extremely active we will not adopt that particular animal to you but rather show you other animals that have the traits you are looking for. All of our dogs are posted on our website At this time we do not have a building so our animals are in foster homes. For more informtion about the pet please e-mail the address that is on the pet's page.
